Back 4 blood review4/5/2023 ![]() If you can't squad up with others, bots will round out your four-person team, although playing in this manner isn't ideal whatsoever. My instances where I did play with some buddies proved to give me the greatest level of enjoyment for a number of reasons, but mostly because real players tended to be vastly more valuable than AI companions. In nearly every way, Back 4 Blood is a game that is meant to be experienced with friends. The thing about Back 4 Blood that makes it most difficult to judge comes with how you might play it. After dabbling with Swarm for a bit, I quickly found myself bouncing off from it and was very content to never return. These small play spaces also make it hard to play as the Ridden, in particular, as it's tough to ever find a way to get the drop on opposing players. Many of the maps associated with this mode are far too small, leaving bouts between Ridden and Cleaners feeling cluttered and devoid of any sort of strategy. The primary issue with Swarm is that it just feels like utter chaos in the worst way. As a whole, the card system in Back 4 Blood is incredibly deep due to the sheer number of cards that you can equip and is meant to ensure that each deck you build will lead to the game being that much more replayable. Cards give your characters different stat bonuses that can improve your zombie-killing prowess. The card system is the most blatant example of this as it allows players to build decks that they can then take with them into the different game modes. In general, Back 4 Blood has a number of RPG elements which add modifiers to your experience. Perhaps the most notable of these involves the card system that lies at the center of the game. While Back 4 Blood is clearly trying to be like Left 4 Dead, there are a number of pretty vast differences. Some of these instances include boss fights, barroom brawls, and setting off massive explosions to kill Ridden in large numbers. Comparatively, Back 4 Blood throws some vastly more unique situations at players compared to what was seen in L4D. The game boasts a number of unique characters (known as Cleaners), weapons, and levels in which you'll be mowing down hordes of the undead while completing various objectives. After that, you’ll need to fight not one, but two bosses that are as cheap as they come.Much like Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood has been built from the ground-up to offer an experience where you can blast zombies (or Ridden, as they're referred to) with some pals. You’ll get a variety of chests to open, with the hope you might find one of the expansions 7 new guns – but don’t count on it, they are few and far between. ![]() While the first layer of the hive is somewhat manageable, the second section is a slap to the face. However, the frustration doesn’t stop there. While you’re holding them, that’s your weapon – if you try to change your weapon, you drop them. The problem is these skulls must be carried to the end of the level – meaning at most, one per person, assuming you can even find them. One objective in these caves is to find special skulls that can be used to unlock new cards, etc in the main game. But despite their badass demeanours, you’ll still be at the mercy of poor game design when you dive into these Tunnels of Terror. The highlight of this expansion pack is the inclusion of two new heroes for players to select, Sharice and Heng. While these three monsters are simply new variants of existing foes, this doesn’t make them any less lethal. Urchin, Shredder, and Ripper make their deadly debut in Tunnels of Terror. In addition to these new garden variety zombies, you’ll also encounter a handful of new creatures lurking in the dark tunnels. As someone who focus primarily on melee combat, this was a huge annoyance, as it constantly made me a target for hordes. In Tunnels of Terror, there are now greenish zombies that will cover you in zombie-attracting goop if you get too close. If you’ve played the main game, you’ll be familiar with the massive Reeker creature that expels zombie-attracting vomit on players. From there, you’ll explore a maze of caves filled with undead hordes chasing you down. You essentially repel down a hole into a dark, disgusting cavern filled with rock and monster goo.
